All I see are some simples arranged alligator-statue-wise. ;)

Are you sure you see that? Maybe all you see are simples arranged pixelwise?

Great mid-tones on the alligator. Shadows have detail.

Get closer! On my screen, if I hit plus, there’s a very nice crop with the alligator. Of course, if you get closer, you will have to stop down to get adequate depth of field. Then you will need a longer exposure... Such are the joys of medium format photography.

Judging by the plinth, focus seems to be a bit forward. But maybe this was necessary to get the front teeth in focus – I’m not sure about the geometry.

You're right: the focus should have been moved back a little. I think even the closest teeth are a little out of focus, though the closest paw looks sharp.

My close-up eyesight has gotten a lot poorer over the last couple of years. I may need to pack reading glasses to focus on the focusing screen, though maybe the camera's pop-out magnifying glass (which I did try to use) should have been good enough.
